Only having less than a hundred to get started, Jim Penman started a small lawn mowing income while getting a PhD in college. He started Balwyn Gardening, later titled “Jim’s Mowing”, as a full-time business in the early 80′s. The Jim’s business proved enough of a success to be replicated through other businesses, with the Jim’s Group creating divisions for all manner of company and household services between 1994 and this day. He originally aimed simply at employing subcontractors, but his business grew and he gradually started to specialize in the founding and selling of yard mowing routes – over a hundred over many years.
Shortly after, Jim Penman franchised his company and ever since then the increase of Jim’s Mowing has been quick. The conversion to franchising came from a desire to provide great customer service, and with all the risk of competition from the coming of VIP Home Services.
With this humble start, at first with the thought of earning “a few dollars” by mowing other’s lawns, Jim’s Mowing has grown into the world’s largest lawn mowing franchise. The franchise proved amazingly successful, with over 60 Franchisees functional by the closing of the first year and established in all Australian states within the first three years. From being modest and comparatively unknown, it is now the greatest and most known yard mowing brand on earth.
The cleaning franchise was started after this, and was soon added with dog wash, fencing, handyman and about a dozen other departments that then operated in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and great Britain. Lately, Jim’s has established a number of new departments. Each one of these are operated as joint ventures, with experienced people providing their technical expertise and Jim’s focusing on the administration and franchising side. It has been a very winning move. Dedication to serving customer found this business grow at a rapid speed having more clients than a single person could effectively manage, leading Jim to commence franchising in 1989.
